Blogmania! Why am I starting yet another blog?

by Daniel Ho on 2007/03/02

Nobody Cares

This is the second blog that I’ve started within the last 30 days. The other one is The Learning Guys with Paul Dillon. There, “we ruminate on breakthrough ideas, current trends, and innovative best practices in learning.”

This blog is my personal blog. I liked what Chris Brogan said in his latest post about reasons to use these new media tools.

Yes, part of this is pure vanity to think that anyone else wants to read what I think. However, if someone meets me briefly and wants to get a sense of what I’m about when they get back to their computer…come here and take a look!

This is a way for me to explore and think about the world around me, and for others to get a glimpse of what I’m about.

A net presence feels more and more important these days. That’s part of why *I* do it, but then again, my job is primarily on the Internet.

Chris,

I agree. While I’ve had websites since the days of Viola on X-Window, and worked on early web based applications with a relational database backend…it is only in the past few years that I really felt that an online presence is an absolute must. As a way to connect with people that aren’t in your circle and aren’t geeks.

More and more of the people I meet now will go on the web to Google my name to see what they can find out about me prior to our meeting. In the past, this may have seemed a bit creepy, but now I’m thinking…why not? If they are going to find out something about me without asking…they may as well still get it straight from the horse’s mouth! Also, I’m getting a fair amount of contacts through tools like my LinkedIn profile.

It is also great to see that instead of distancing us, collaborative technology can be used for the “forces of good”, if you will. Not just social networking, but the pioneering work done by Homeless Nation and the ability to share niche ideas and information. A great example of this is the children’s book podcast JustOneMoreBook.com . The area is nascent but developing quickly. Both of these projects, I only heard about from PodCamp Toronto.

Other than attending physical events, blogging and hyperlinking everything lets us all develop our interests outside of our areas of expertise and understanding. Even though the changes have all been evolutionary vs. revolutionary to me as I’ve always been “in the game” as well…I KNOW it has given me a much richer life and a better understanding of the world around me.
